George was born on February 23, 1923 in Palestine, Texas. He attended high school in Dallas and spent one year working and traveling the United States before joining the Army in World War II. His service included expert marksmanship, keen interpretation of Morse Code and of the technology at the time, e.g. the Enigma machine, leaving at the rank of Sergeant. He met his bride, a ballet dancer, in Germany. They eventually made Denver, Colorado their home. He worked for the US Forest Service and then the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad until his retirement in 1985.
His wife's Ballet Denver Company and teaching career ended in 2007, upon her death; however, her ballet family became great friends to George.
He enjoyed classical music, reading, and teaching himself many languages and histories—particularly that of the United States—while he remained active with the Vote and in his interests toward political issues. He moved to Columbus, Nebraska in 2017 to be near his children, Clarissa and George, Esq., and grandson Damian, who survive him. He passed peacefully at age 96 on March 10, 2019.
In lieu of flowers, please favor George with your participation in the Vote in celebration of him and of your own lives.
We have it in our power to begin the world over again. Thomas Paine
