George A. Bixenmann, age 87, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, September 3, 2005 at Morys Haven in Columbus. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday with an 8:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.

George was born January 2, 1918 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Alphonsus and Georgia (Carl) Bixenmann. He graduated from Grand Island High School in 1937. George entered the U.S. Army in 1940 and was assigned to the isle of Oahu in the territory of Hawaii. He was there at Pearl Harbor during the attack on it. In 1943 he returned to the States and graduated from OCS as a 2nd Lieutenant. His army specialty was in Explosive Ordinance Disposal. After serving in France, Luxenburg, Belgium and Germany, George returned to the United States in 1945. In 1971 he retired from the Army reserves as Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 320th Ordinance Battalion. On March 12, 1943 he was united in marriage to Flora Jean Johnson from Albion, Nebraska. George worked with Loup Public Power District from 1945 - 1983. He began his career as a Lineman in Grand Island and retired as an Electrical Engineer. In 1976 he assumed the additional duties and responsibilities of supervising the Safety and Job Training Program until his retirement in 1983. George was also active in the Platte County Civil Defense from 1971 - 2003. He began as Columbus Director of Civil Defense and retired as Deputy Director of Platte County Civil Defense. His hobbies included many but his favorite interests were computers, genealogy and HAM radios. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights Of Columbus, Hartman Post #84 American Legion and the V.F.W. Post #3704.
