Gene L. Cumming

Gene L. Cumming, 84, of St. Edward, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.
Gene was born May 15, 1933 on the family farm six miles east of St. Edward to Robert J. and Belle (Curry) Cumming. He graduated from St. Edward High School in 1950 and attended Omaha Business College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, from June 22, 1953, to April 26, 1955.
He married Nadine L. Lage on August 5, 1956 at the First Methodist Church in Wayne. The couple made their home on the family farm 6 miles east of St. Edward until moving into St. Edward in 1989. Gene was a cattle feeder for over 60 years, first as R.J. Cumming and Sons, then Cumming Brothers and finally as C & H Cattle Company.
Gene served 13 years on the Bunker Hill District 83, Platte County School Board, 9 years on the Tri-Valley Co-op Board in St. Edward, has been involved with the Platte County Livestock Feeders Association, the St. Edward Community Club, the Community Foundation Board, the St. Edward Housing Authority Board and with American Legion Crosier Post 226 where he was a member of the Honor Guard.
He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in St. Edward, serving on many boards and committees over the years.
Gene is survived by a daughter, Carol Hassebrook (Wayne) of Bellwood, NE; sons, Scott Cumming (Cliff Whittle) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Alan Cumming (Mary) of Moorhead, IA; grandchildren, Mark Hassebrook of Raymond, Bruce Hassebrook (Tracy) of Genoa and Ryan Hassebrook (Kristen) of Raymond, Robert J. Cumming of Moorhead, IA, and Kaitlyn Katie Cumming of Lincoln, NE; great-grandchildren, Blake, Hannah, Amelia, Brooks and Charlie; sister-in-law, Donna Hansen of Wayne, NE, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nadine on August 20, 2007, brother and sister-in-law, Don and Clara Cumming and brother-in-law, Lester Hansen.
If friends so desire, memorials may be directed to the St. Edward Fire/Rescue Department, the St. Edward Public Library, or to the St. Edward United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
