Everett F. Hemmer was born September 3, 1928 in rural Platte County at the farm home near Cornlea, Nebraska to Guido and Catherine (Brandl) Hemmer. He grew up on the family farm and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Cornlea through the 8th grade, he was baptized, received his 1st Holy Communion and was confirmed at Sacred Heart Church. He worked with his dad on the farm feeding cattle and caring for a herd of beef cows on a ranch in Wheeler County. On August 15, 1951 he was drafted in the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean Conflict with Btry D. 102 AAA Gun Battalion stationed at Indiantown Gap, PA. He was honorably discharged on August 13, 1953. He was united in marriage to Norma Jean Herink on January 21, 1952 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. They were blessed to become the parents of four children. After the military service they returned to his home farm and continued farming and ranching. In 1963 they discontinued ranching and expanded their dairy herd which they continued until their retirement. Everett lived his whole life on the farm where he was born. His main interests and greatest enjoyment was working with the baby calves during spring calving season on their Ranch near Bartlett until later years when his health impaired his work. Everett continued to farm the land which was purchased by his grandfather in 1902 and was passed down through the generations and in doing so received the Pioneer Farm Award for keeping the farm in the family for at least 100 years. Everett and his wife made their home in Columbus their retirement and his sons have continued to farm the land. Everett was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, American Legion and enjoyed a neighborhood card club for many years.
