Gene was the 13th child born on October 14, 1941, to Barbara (Dush) Zywiec and Peter Zywiec in Genoa.  He is survived by his wife, Delores "Dee" (Kosiba) Zywiec of 62 years.  They were married at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Duncan on October 28, 1961.  Gene attended St. Anthony's grade school and graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in 1959.  He worked 40 years for the Union Pacific Railroad.  Over the years he enjoyed traveling, gardening, snow skiing, boating, music, and the family and friends at the cabin he built with his brother Al, and son Gary.  He enjoyed polka music and created the Nebraska Harmony Boys Polka Band with the late Jim Kozak.  A special part of his life was being a grandpa and also a great grandpa to Briella and Josie.

Gene and Dee were members of St. Isidore's Church for 30 years prior to joining St. Stephen the Martyr when they moved to Omaha.  Gene was very faithful in his Catholic faith and active in various programs.  He was devoted to the Holy Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet.  On March 19, 2006, he became a Benedictine Oblate of Christ the King Priory.

He is survived by his son Gary (Cindy) Zywiec of Columbus; daughter Sherri Zywiec of Omaha; grandson Nicholas Zywiec of Columbus; granddaughter Abbi (Tyler) Oakley of Columbus; Grandson Cole (Cara) Zywiec of Silt, Colorado; Grandson Michael Zywiec of Omaha; sisters-in-law Gerri (Leo) Majorek; Kathleen Davis; Pat Zywiec; and Donna Zywiec; daughter-in-law Mic Zywiec.
