Eugene Bernt of Columbus died Saturday October 26, 2002 at Columbus Community Hospital. Services are10:30 a.m. Tuesday; October 29, 2002 at St. Isidore Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph A. Miksch will officiate. Burial with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Monday at McKown Funeral Home. A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
Eugene A. Bernt was born November 7, 1917 in Polk County, Nebraska to Albert and Hilda (Zeleny) Bernt. He received his education at Polk County District #68. In 1941 Eugene entered the U.S. Army and served during WWII until 1946 when he returned home. Eugene was united in marriage to Helen Miksch on April 8, 1947 in Platte Center, Nebraska. He farmed in Platte County for over fifty years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church where he had served on the Parish Council, and was a member of Holy Name Society and a Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. Eugene served on the District #3 School Board for 12 years and was a 4-H leader for 15 years.
