Ernie Schmidt of Columbus died Wednesday March 15, 2017 at Columbus Community Hospital.
Ernie Schmidt was born September 15, 1946 in Platte County to Otto and Loretta (Beller) Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Humphrey High School in 1964. Ernie farmed with his older brothers. He was united in marriage to Theresa Mae Jazwick on January 9, 1971 at St. Joseph Church in Platte Center. They continued to farm northwest of Platte Center and raise their family of 4 boys. Following Theresas passing in 2009, Ernie was united in marriage to Becky Zach-Micek in Juneau, AK on September 10, 2013. He moved to Wagners Lake in Columbus while continuing to farm with his son Craig. Ernie loved bowling, fishing, traveling, time on the lake, and teaching his grandchildren to farm. He also enjoyed raising sweet corn and making sausage to share with his family and friends. Ernie served on the Platte Center District 24 School Board for many years, the Platte County Agricultural Society Board, and had served on the St. Joseph Parish Council.
