Elza died Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Elza McKay was born January 3, 1946 in Winner, South Dakota to Oscar Lee and Retha Irene (West) McKay. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1964 and attended Wayne State College. Elza served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War from November 17, 1966 to September 9, 1968 where he received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. In 1969 he married Deborah Burnight in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple moved to Columbus in 1979. Elza worked for the Nebraska horse racing circuit as a trainer, jockey agent and horse owner. The couple also owned and operated the D & E Bar for 10 years until retiring due to health reasons. Elza was a member of St. Anthony Church.
