Elvira Caffrey

Elvira W. Caffrey, age 85, of Greeley, Nebraska formerly of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, July 2, 2005 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. Funeral Services 10:30 a.m. Wednesday July 6, 2005 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Tom Weisbecker officiating. Burial is in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues Wednesday morning from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Elvira Caffrey Memorial Fund c/o City National Bank in Greeley, Nebraska.

Elvira W. Caffrey was born March 23, 1920 in Wayne, Nebraska to Henry and Katie (Kennedy) Schroeder. She graduated from Wayne High School and attended Wayne State Teachers College. She taught country school near Wayne for 2 years before moving to Grand Island where she graduated from the Grand Island Business College. On June 18, 1946 Elvira was united in marriage to Walter "Tom" Caffrey at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. She worked for Consumer Public Power and then managed the Nebraska Public Power Credit Union until her retirement. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, St. Bonaventure Guild, Catholic Daughters of America and was currently a member of Sacred Heart Church in Greeley. Elvira enjoyed playing cards, bingo, traveling, flowers and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors of her immediate family include one daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Bill McQuillan of Greeley, Nebraska; and a son, Don Caffrey of Wayne, Nebraska. She was also a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Tom" Caffrey; her mother and father, Henry and Katie Schroeder; and two sons, Thomas H. Caffrey and James W. Caffrey.
