Elsie died Wednesday at the Genoa Long Term Care.
Elsie M. Martin was born June 20, 1913 in Marshall, Minnesota to Ivar and Hilda (Gustafson) Carlson. She moved with her family to Polk County, Nebraska in 1916 and grew up on a farm near Havens, Nebraska. She attended Riverside School and graduated in 1932 from Silver Creek High School where she was valedictorian. On September 1, 1938 she married Harold E. Martin in a double ceremony with her sister Lucy and Carl Holm in Grand Island. The couple resided in Silver Creek all their married years. Elsie was a wonderful homemaker and worked for 30 years as a cook in the Silver Creek Schools. She was a life long member of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women. While raising five daughters, Sundays were a time spent in church and she taught Sunday School for many years. As a homemaker, it was through her sewing skills and 4-H that her daughters learned to cook and sew. Elsie enjoyed quilting, reading, cross-word puzzles and always looked forward to playing cards and visiting with friends at the Senior Citizens, her children and grandchildren. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, a good neighbor and a special friend to many. We will all miss her.
