Elizabeth "Betts" Mary Brenner, age 83, of Mesa, Arizona died Monday, November 7, 2005 in Mesa, AZ. Funeral services are 10:30 am Monday, November 14 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Rev. Tom Weisbecker officiating. Interment is in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home.
Elizabeth Mary Brenner was born February 4, 1922 in Iron Mountain, MI to Adrian and Barbara (Karasek) Johnson. In 1940 she graduated from Luther Wright High School, Iron Wood, MI, and in 1943 from St. Mary of Nazareth School of Nursing in Chicago, IL. During World War II she served as a nurse in the United States Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Chicago, Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA and at San Margarita Hospital in Oceanside, CA.
On November 24, 1945 she married S.E. "Gene" Brenner at San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, CA. They moved to Columbus in 1949 where they started Brenner Furniture. She was active in many charitable organizations serving as a Regent of the Catholic Daughters and Treasurer of the Prairie Hills Girl Scout Council. In 1977 she and her husband retired to Mesa, AZ. While living in Columbus, she was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church and later the All Saints Parish in Mesa. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, bird watching, reading, traveling, and retirement with her husband.
Survivors include her husband, Gene of Mesa; two sons, Larry (Kathy) Brenner of Columbus and Mark (Marilee) Brenner of Prairie Village, KS; a daughter, Barbara (Dave) Crooker of Long Pine, NE; a sister, Ann Paicius of Finley Park, IL; and grandchildren, Allyson and Keith Brenner; Sarah and Kady Brenner; and Jennifer, Ryan, Beth and Debra Crooker.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Joseph Johnson; and granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Brenner.
