Edward F. Szatko of Platte Center died Friday, October 21, 2016 at Brookestone Acres in Columbus.
Edward was born March 9, 1944 in Greeley, NE to Joseph and Gertrude (Kowalski) Szatko. Ed attended schools in Greeley and in Platte Center where he graduated from Platte Center High in 1962. He enlisted in the US Navy from 1963-1969 during Vietnam. Ed served on the USS Prichett and on the USS Beatty where he was a Boilerman 2nd Class. He was awarded the Secretary of the Navy Commendation for Achievement. Ed was united in marriage to Mary Rosenthal on September 6, 1969 at St. Joseph Church. He was the owner of Ed's Mobil in Platte Center, the Village Cafe, Rite-Way Cafe, and retired in 2015 after 25 years at CAMACO. Ed also ran the lunch counter at Columbus Bowl. Ed was a past commander of Parry Post #283 American Legion in Platte Center and started Legion baseball in Platte Center in the 70s. He was part of the Toastmasters, K of C, and taught CCD at St. Josephs where he also served as a lector and EHMC. Ed loved bowling, watching sports, and spending time with his grandkids and family.
