Dorothy Dierman, age 75 passed away on Wednesday, the 16th of October , 2013 at Cottonwood House, in Columbus, Nebraska.
Dorothy was born on March 9th, 1938 to Ernest and Dorthea McCarthy and was raised in Warren, Massachusetts. She graduated from Warren High School in 1956 and later attended Worcester State Teachers College. She earned a degree in Education. She was an English teacher in Mahwah, New Jersey, where she met her husband Bob Dierman. They were married August 3rd, 1963. They had two children, Karl Dierman of Columbus, and Mary (Dierman) Stock of Philadelphia, PA. Dorothy and Bob celebrated their 50th Anniversary this past August.
In 1969 the family left the New Jersey for the wilds of Wyoming, where Bob had taken a job at Douglas High School as Principal. During their time there, Dorothy, in addition to being a full time Mom, was also a columnist for the Douglas Budget, the local newspaper. In 1979, the Dierman family moved to Columbus, NE, where Bob had taken a job at Columbus Senior High School as Principal. Dorothy kept up her writing skills by writing advertising for the radio station, KLIR. After working for KLIR, Dorothy became the Director of the former Transitional Living Center, which was a halfway house for chemically dependent young men. It was, perhaps, her most favorite job, as it encompassed her teaching and her love of writing, as well as giving her the ability to make a lasting difference in many of the young men who went through her program.
Her parents, Ernest and Dorthea, and her brother Richard McCarthy precede Dorothy in death.
Her husband, Robert, her son, Karl, her daughter-in-law, Kelli, daughter, Mary and her husband William, and her 9 grand children survive Dorothy.
