Doris Melliger

Doris Melliger of Columbus died peacefully at home Saturday morning from a battle with cancer at the age of 90. She was surrounded by family.

A funeral Mass will be held at a later date at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Father Ross Burkhalter celebrating. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, from 3-8 p.m. at McKown Funeral Home.  Due to Covid-19 only immediate family members will be at a funeral Mass Friday morning followed by Interment at St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery.

Doris was born October 21, 1929 to Herman and Lydia (Bohler) Lemp in Columbus, NE. She attended rural school District 8 in Platte County. She graduated from Monroe High School. Doris married Carroll Melliger on September 21, 1949. They farmed all of their lives in Platte County. She was a homemaker, helped out on the farm, a member of St. Anthony's Church in which she had served on the Parish Council and the St. Theresa's Sodality. She worked serving funeral dinners for 40 years. She was a member of several clubs including, Extension, Kountry Kousins, and Ladies of the Lake. She was a 4-H leader for many years. Her lifelong interests included baking cinnamon rolls and bread, crocheting, gardening, making quilts, flower gardening, golf and watching and feeding her birds. Carroll and Doris loved to travel together and play cards with friends. She loved playing with her great grandchildren.

Doris is survived by daughter Diane Blahak of Lincoln, grandchildren Chad (Tera) Blahak, JaNae (Matt) Pence, Ryan (Emily)  Blahak, daughter Kate (Boyd) Jones of Columbus, grandchildren Meghan (Greg) Hunt, Eric (Kim) Kluever, Bo (Amber) Jones, Bryan Kluever, Melanie Kluever, Dara (Justin) Ricketts, Benjamen Jones, Mollie Jones, son Dave (Susie) Melliger of Johnson Lake, grandson Michael Melliger, son Gregg (Cindy) Melliger of Columbus, grandchildren Brent (Carmen) Melliger, Shanna (Matt) Niedbalski, Joshua (Lindsay) Melliger, daughter Jacki (Dennis) Ryba of Shelby, NE, 33 great grandchildren, brother Don (Judy) Lemp of Vidor, TX, sister-in-law Shirley Lemp, sister-in-law Margaret (Richard) Nosal.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carroll, her parents, sister Lucille Killham, brothers Harold, Kenneth and Dick, son-in-law Joe Blahak, grandchildren Jaisa Melliger, Travis Melliger and Joshua Kluever.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Anthony's Catholic Church or Scotus Central Catholic High School.
