Donald G. Salak

Donald went home to be with his Lord on November 27, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Donald G. Salak was born on December 24, 1933 in Schuyler to Rudolph and Rose (Slegl) Salak. In 1953 he married Janet Tanke of Fremont. To this union, 5 children were born: Donald, Darryl, Debra, David and Denise.

Donald graduated from Schuyler High School and entered the U.S. Navy in April 1953. He served 21 years and retired in 1973. During his time on active duty, he attended radio, cryptology and Russian language schools. His duty stations included Adak (Aleutian Islands); Okinawa (Japan); Morocco (Africa); Hawaii; Washington, D.C.; Fort Meade, MD; California; and Maine.

After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Donald moved back to Nebraska and worked for the Social Security Administration and then as a special agent for the Defense Department from which he retired in 1993.

Donald was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3704 and the American Legion Post 84 of Columbus. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, U.S. Naval Cryptologic Association, Fleet Reserve Association, and was an Admiral in The Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.

Donald loved to travel and spend time with his family, especially at his cabin on the Platte River. He took great pride in his yard and outdoor projects such as gardening. He also loved music of all kinds, and he always said the louder the better. He especially loved country music which was known as Grandpas river music. Donald loved all animals and actively supported many animal rescue groups.

Donald and Janet just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in February.

Preceding Donald in death are his parents and a brother Maurice Salak.

Survivors include his wife Janet of Columbus; sons Donald (Sharon) of Paradise, CA; Darryl, and David (Jennifer) of Omaha; daughters Debra (Joseph, Jr.) Shannon of Omaha, and Denise (Michael) Schaecher of Centennial, CO; 13 grandchildren Dedra, Daniel, Zachariah, Corinne, Alexander, Wyatt, Douglas, Derek, Robert, Ryan, Amber, Kelsey and Kayla; 2 step-grandchildren Joseph P., and Lindi; 10 great grandchildren; and 2 step-great grandchildren; brother Duane (Paula) Salak of Omaha; sister Marcella Harris of Omaha; and sister-in-law Mildred Salak of Schuyler.

Memorials may be directed to the wishes of the family.
