Dona May Brestel, 72, of Columbus died Friday, January 21, 2005 at her home. Services are 10:30 am Tuesday, January 25 at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Michael Klatt & Rev. Thomas Volker officiating. Visitation is on Monday from 3-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues Tuesday morning from 9:30 am until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 am at the church on Tuesday. Interment is in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the families wishes.
Dona May Brestel was born September 15, 1932 in St. Paul, NE to Lynn & Venus (Matousek) Scarborough. She grew up in the St. Paul/St. Libory area of Nebraska, attending schools in St. Paul. She received her teaching certificate from Kearney State Teachers College. She taught school in Dalton, NE and in the Grand Island area. She married Glenn Brestel on August 12, 1956 in St. Paul at the First Presbyterian Church. Dona lived in Dalton, NE where her and her husband operated Brestel Grocery from 1957-1964. She also lived in Sterling, CO, Cairo, NE, and later moved to Columbus in 1968. She went to work for TEMPO in Columbus and worked there until its closing. Dona also worked at the Columbus Manor, Home Health, and at First Steps Daycare. Dona dearly loved her children and grandchildren, mailboxes, and Husker Football. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa while in college.
