DeWayne Nicolas of Columbus died Saturday at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2023 at St. Isidore Catholic Church. Visitation is Friday 4-6 p.m. There will be a 6:00 p.m. vigil service all at the St. Isidore Church. Military honors will be by The American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard. Interment will be in the All Saints Cemetery.
DeWayne Nicolas was born February 18, 1942 in Columbus to George C. and Frances L. (Theewen) Nicolas. He received his education at Bellwood High School and graduated in 1959. He was raised on the family farm near Bellwood. He enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1967. He was married to Barbara Sokol on May 25, 1963 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Three children were born to this union: Jeffrey, Jeanne, and Julie. DeWayne and Barbara were married 60 years, living in Columbus and raising their family. DeWayne worked at Behlen Manufacturing for forty years until his retirement. DeWayne enjoyed any game of cards, watching western movies, game shows, puttering in the garage, working on mowers, cars, and was handy with anything that needed to be fixed. He ushered many years at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. He also loved to garden and volunteer at the hospital. He was a member of the Eagles, the American Legion, and Harold Squares Dance Club.
DeWayne is survived by his wife: Barbara, son: Jeffrey (Kathie) Nicolas, daughter: Jeanne (Shannon) Wright, daughter: Julie (Scott Sommers) Henninger, grandchildren: Ashley Henninger, Nicolas Wright, and Abby (David) Ellefson, brother-in-law: John Sokol and sister-in-law: Nina Nicolas, five nieces, several cousins, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents: George and Frances Nicolas, brother: Harold Nicolas, father-in-law and mother in-law: John and Minnie Sokol, dogs: Buddy and Rambo.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Isidore Parish Center Building Fund.
