Dennis DeAlton Meridith, 61, of Silver Creek died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at his home in rural Silver Creek as the result of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Funeral services are 10:30 am Wednesday, May 18 at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek with the Rev. Bev Hieb officiating. Interment will be at the Silver Creek Cemetery. Visitation is on Tuesday from 6-8 pm at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek and continues Wednesday morning from 9:30 am until service time, also at the church. The family requests any memorials be made to further ALS research.
Dennis was born August 2, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska to Fred and Hazel (Benson) Meridith. He grew up in LeMars and Webster City, IA where he graduated from high school. He continued his education at the University of Iowa where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees.
Dennis served as an Assistant US Attorney in Sioux City, IA for two years. He and his family moved to Albuquerque, NM where he worked in private practice for 20 years. During that time, Dennis also earned an accounting degree and his CPA certificate. He spent the subsequent years practicing tax law. He moved to Des Moines, IA where he was the Head of Tax Policy for the Iowa Department of Revenue. He then moved to his grandmother's farm outside of Silver Creek, working first as a trust officer at the Oak Tree Trust Company and then practicing law in Columbus until his semi-retirement. Simultaneously, he established, with his son, an alfalfa hay operation and devoted time to renovating the Nellie Benson house on the family farm, homesteaded in 1871.
Dennis was a member of the Nebraska, Iowa, and New Mexico Bar Associations and the CPA Society of New Mexico. He was a private pilot who enjoyed flying, carpentry, putting up hay, and will be remembered for his varied interests, especially debating the political and social issues of the day.
