David Randall &Quot;Randy&Quot; Betz

April 4, 1954 — March 30, 2018

David Randall "Randy" Betz died Friday, March 30, 2018, at Brookstone Acres from complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Randy was born April 5th, 1954, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to James and Lavera (Holmes) Betz. He grew up in Atlantic, Iowa, and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1972. Randy was an athlete at AHS, earning letters in football, basketball, track, and music. Randy received a track scholarship to Northwest Missouri State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business. On August 16, 1975, Randy married his high school sweetheart, Christine Bortle, and upon graduating from NWMSU, moved to Columbus, Nebraska. He was employed at Dale Electronics, RW Beck and Associates, and finally at Nebraska Public Power District, where he worked for almost 39 years as a billing specialist.
Randy loved music, from classic rock, to jazz, to gospel. He was a member of the Simple Truth Quartet, proclaiming the gospel message through song, during the 1980s. Randy loved America's National Parks, especially the West. Hiking and photographing those parks, along with his family, was something he enjoyed immensely. Randy also rode motorcycles, especially his Kawasaki, and appreciated several motorcycle trips with his father.
Randy was a member of Highland Park Evangelical Free Church, serving as an elder, Bible teacher, worship leader, singer and lay preacher. He loved studying God's Word, and teaching his three sons practical truths from the Bible.
Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in August, 2001, Randy did not slow down. He continued to work at Nebraska Public Power District until October, 2008, when he came home on long term disability. Randy could often be seen on his trike, riding around Columbus. His later years were spent watching westerns and old TV series, listening to the Bible and music, while eating Milk Duds and drinking a Dr Pepper.
