David J. Murphy, age 70, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2019 at David Place in David City, NE.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2019 at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus, NE. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Thursday, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus. Following the burial a luncheon will be held at the Eagles Club in Columbus.
David was born on August 23, 1948 in Columbus to Francis and Maryo (Carrig) Murphy. He grew up in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School in 1966.
On July 3, 1968 he was united in marriage to Susan Santage at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus.
After graduation David worked with his father at the family owned business, Murphy's Standard which he later owned. David also worked as a contract mail route driver, owned Murph's Repair Shop, worked at Behlen's Manufacturing and before retiring helped Susan with managing Lakeview Apartments in Columbus.
David loved all sports and was especially proud of being chosen to play for the Shrine Bowl All Star Team in 1966. Throughout his life he also played baseball, softball and golf and was an avid Husker fan.
David was an avid lover of classic and muscle cars and was a member of the Midwest Street Rod Association for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Susan (Santage) Murphy; his children: Shelley (Robbie) Beguin of Gordon, NE and Steven (Deb) Murphy of Bellwood, NE. Grandchildren: Kaylee Murphy, McKenna Murphy, Ashley Beguin, Rodney Beguin, Adam Brewer, and Kim (Josh) Heuer; and 4 great-grandchildren; brother Don (Karen) Murphy of Hadar, NE; sisters Colleen (Murphy) Ewert of Gold River, CA, and Michelle (Jerry) Foral of Omaha, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Maryo (Carrig) Murphy; in-laws Calvin and Helen (Shemek) Santage; brother-in-law, David Ewert and one great-grandson, Colton Heuer.
