Clayton E. Schwartz, age 75, of Columbus & Platte Center, Nebraska died Saturday October 23, 2004 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday October 29, 2004 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Tom Weisbecker officiating. Burial will be in the All Saints Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Friday morning from 8:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home.
Clayton Eugene Schwartz was born January 25, 1929 in Sidney, Nebraska to Joseph and Melanie (Kaune) Schwartz. He grew up in Potter, Nebraska and graduated from Potter High School. He married Geraldine L. Lambrecht on September 23, 1951 in Red Cloud, Nebraska. They lived in Potter, Nebraska for a short time before moving to Columbus in 1954. Clayton played semi-pro baseball for the Omaha Cardinals for several years. He started Schwartz Sign Company and operated it until retiring in 2001. Clayton served a couple years in the National Guard. He was a member of the Apollo Club - a local men's singing club, past president of the Lion's Club, past member of the Columbus Area Arts Council and the Chamber of Commerce. Clayton also worked nationwide as a professional Santa with Bob George in which he was Santa for the southern states. He received the prestigious Admiral of the Great Navy Award from the Governor. Clayton was an avid fisherman, oil painter and Cornhusker fan. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, church usher, perpetual adoration and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus #938.
