Chelsea died Friday, May 6, 2011 in Omaha.
Chelsea was born on March 25, 1988 to Crystal A. (Peterson) and Kelly J. Maly in Norfolk, NE. She enjoyed Girl Scouts and attended Norfolk Public Schools. She moved with her mother and siblings to Hastings, NE, where they resided from 1996 to 1998, and where Chelsea participated in Girls Scouts and Y soccer. The family moved to Columbus, NE in 1998. In the summer of 2005, Chelsea completed a five-week honors program at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, where she completed college courses and was nicknamed "Nebraska." She graduated from Columbus High School in 2006. She was active in basketball one year and in Mock Trial and the Speech Team all four years. She was active in Project Extra Mile's youth coalition in Columbus, NE, which included her testifying in front of the Nebraska legislature. She was also a member of the youth group "The Feds," with Federated Church and participated in the annual church Christmas play. In her senior year, Chelsea received a national Speech award, the only Nebraska recipient.
Chelsea completed one year of college at Creighton University, followed by one year at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, NE, with interests in creative writing. She then began working as a cook and kitchen manager, with plans to attend culinary arts college. She was employed by The Old Mattress Factory Bar & Grill in Omaha, NE at the time of her death.
Chelsea was a creative, passionate, intelligent, and caring person. She was always ready for a great debate, and she had a wit and vast humor. She loved to write and play music with her guitar, write poetry, cook, and paint.
She is survived by her mother Crystal and siblings, Jordan Maly of Omaha and Lindsay Klassen of Columbus; father, Kelly (Cathy) Maly of Norfolk; grandparents Margaret and Gail Gonnerman of Shelby, NE and Dennis and Sherri Maly of Battle Creek, NE; aunt Stephanie (Kevin) Luchsinger and uncle Chris Peterson of Columbus and uncle Greg Peterson of Bee, NE; aunt Brenda Maly of Fremont, NE and uncle Jim Maly of Norfolk.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather Robert J. Peterson of Shelby, NE, grandmother Darnell Maly of Battle Creek, NE, uncle Randall K. Peterson of Columbus, NE.
