Charles died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Charles J. Wangler was born December 3, 1945 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Frederick and Clara (Wuebben) Wangler. He entered the U.S. Navy in July of 1963 at the age of 17 and served in Vietnam until being honorably discharged in 1966. Charles returned to Columbus and married Patricia Siffring on August 24, 1968 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City. He started his career in law enforcement in 1969 with the Columbus Police Department. He joined the Platte County Sherrif Department in 1974 until 1983. Charlie then returned to active duty with the Nebraska Army National Guard in Columbus. In 1999 he retired with the rank of First Sergeant. He returned to the Columbus Police Department as a Community Service Officer until retiring in December of 2008. Charlie was a member of St. Isidore Church and a member of various veterans, law enforcement and outdoor organizations.
