Charles E. Lowry, Jr. died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska.
Charles E. "Chuck" Lowry, Jr. was born April 4, 1932 to June Robbins and C.E. "Red" Lowry, Sr. in Omaha, Nebraska. He spent his childhood in Omaha and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. After attending UNL he enlisted in the Air Force spending time in Korea. He married Lee Emery on June 2, 1956 in St. Louis. To this union they produced four children, Patrick Michael, Theresa Marie, Jeffry John, and James Charles. Chuck was with Metropolitan Life for over 30 years. He was honored for his service to his customers and to his community. He was a lifetime member of the Columbus Jaycees, past Hartman Post #84 American Legion Commander, served on the Legion Honor Guard, V.F.W. #3704 member, Eagles Club, and volunteered at Columbus Hospital and the Columbus Manor. He spent the majority of his lifetime improving the lives of the handicapped. He served on three different Governor's boards on Mental Retardation. With the help of fellow Jaycees, he started the Opportunity Center in Columbus, the first school for mentally retarded children in the State of Nebraska. He was president of the Beatrice State Home Parents Association on numerous occasions. He was an active member of St. Isidore Catholic Church from its inception.
