Chapin E "Pete" Peterson passed on to be with his Lord and Savior on December 4, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society in Osceola.
Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Silver Creek Methodist Church. Visitation is 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Burial with Military Honors by The American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard is in the Columbus Cemetery.
Chapin was born in Ogallala, Nebraska April 07, 1931, to Walter & Lulu (Benson) Peterson. The family moved from Ogallala to Silver Creek Nebraska in 1934 to a farm west of Silver Creek. Chapin was raised there and attended school in Silver Creek until they moved to a farm west of town. Chapin then attended country school through the eighth grade. He then went to Silver Creek Public school for three years and then spent his senior year at Clarks High School, graduating in 1948. He then worked the summer months at Strong Packing House at Silver Creek. In late September he joined the Army, Basic training was at Fort Sill Oklahoma. After Basic training he was sent to Okinawa for a fifteen-month period. He was discharged and returned home in the spring of 1950. He worked for Robak Oil Co. of Silver Creek until late September when he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. After training at Fort Lewis Washington he was sent to Korea, landing at North Korea on December 3rd. By Christmas his unit was moved to South Korea where he spent 10 months as a Company Clerk at 10th Corp Headquarters. He returned home in October of 1951.
Chapin worked various jobs and met and married Lola "Lee" Ellis of York, NE in Newkirk, Oklahoma in January 1951. They were blessed with two children, Michael and Sharon. He worked various jobs and then in 1958 he was hired at Dale Products in Columbus. In 1984, after living in Silver Creek for many years, he and Lee moved to Columbus. After fifteen years as Quality Manager at Dale Electronics, he retired. He and Lee spent a lot of time Camping at various places but every Summer they spent two weeks in Custer South Dakota. Chapin loved to take his Dog and a backpack and head to various trails in the Hills. He also went on one of the early Volksmarch's to the top of Crazy Horse Mountain carving.
Chapin was a member of the Methodist Church in Silver Creek, The American Legion, Lebanon Lodge, Eastern Star, Crazy Horse Grass roots club and the Dale Alumni. He loved the summer months as he had a Garden of vegetables and enjoyed taking care of his lawn. He loved mornings when he fixed breakfast and then spent time with the morning papers. Chapin also enjoyed all of his neighbors, often having long conversations with most of them. In 2014, he started the first Peterson Cousins reunion. A family tradition that still continues to this day.
Survivors include children Mike (Chris) Peterson of Columbus and Sharon "Sheri" Peterson of Osceola. A Step-Daughter, Deanna Nielsen of Lennox, S.D. Grand Children, Megan Peterson, Columbus, Aaron (Crystal) Jones Osceola, Stacia Jones Osceola Michelle (Brandon) Salisbury, Grand Island. Great Grand Children, two great-great grandchildren, and many Nieces and Nephews.
Chapin was preceded in passing by; Wife Lola "Lee", Father Walter and Mother Lulu Peterson, Brothers Virgil (Helen), Vernon (Phyllis), Sister Ila (Emanuel) Klein and numerous Aunts and Uncles, and Friends.
