Carroll Melliger of Columbus died peacefully at home Wednesday evening with his wife and children at his side.
Carroll was born July 28, 1924 to Albert and Pauline (Merz) Melliger in Columbus, NE. Carroll married Doris Lemp on September 21, 1949 at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. Carroll graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in 1941. He played his saxophone with the Dr. Pepper Band while in his teens. He farmed in Platte County his entire life. Carroll was a member of St. Anthony Church and served on the parish council and finance committee. He was a charter and honorary member of the Knights of Columbus #9264. He was a life member of the NRA and the Columbus Rifle Club. He served on the Scotus Alumni Board and the Endowment Committee. He was named the Scotus Alumnus of the year in 2001. He served on the Platte County Ag Society and was inducted into the Ag Society Hall of Fame in 2004. He served on the Husker Coop Board of Directors. He was a 4-H leader. He was recognized as the Columbus Chamber of Commerce 2009 Outstanding Senior Farmer of the year. He enjoyed hunting, golf, Husker football, playing cards, traveling and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. After farming he enjoyed living on the lake, fishing, boating and socializing.
Carroll is survived by his wife, Doris of 68 years, daughter Diane Blahak of Lincoln, grandchildren Chad (Tera) Blahak, JaNae (Matt) Pence, Ryan (Emily) Blahak, daughter Kate (Boyd) Jones of Columbus, grandchildren Meghan (Greg) Hunt, Eric (Kim) Kluever, Bo (Amber) Jones, Bryan Kluever, Melanie (Aaron) Druery, Dara (Justin) Ricketts, Benjamen Jones, Mollie Jones, son Dave (Susie) Melliger of Johnson Lake, NE, grandson Michael (Kim) Melliger, son Gregg (Cindy) Melliger of Columbus, grandchildren Brent (Carmen) Melliger, Shanna (Matt) Niedbalski, Joshua (Lindsay) Melliger, daughter Jacki (Dennis) Ryba of Bennington, Kansas, 31 great grandchildren, sister Margaret (Richard) Nosal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Warren, Milt and Joseph and sisters Doris Clemons and Paula Mae Melliger, son-in-law Joe Blahak, grandchildren Jaisa Melliger, Travis Melliger and Joshua Kluever.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Anthonys Catholic Church or Scotus Central Catholic High School.
