Carroll D. Henke

Carroll died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Carroll D. Henke was born October 19, 1927 in Platte County, NE to Henry B. and Olga A. (Wurdeman) Henke. He grew up in Platte County where he attended and was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church and School. Carroll worked on his uncle's farm until he joined in the U.S. Army. He served during WWII from 1946 - 1947. Upon his discharge he went to work for Al Morlok Construction and Platte Valley Insulation. Carroll started Henke Cement Works which he owned for over 38 years. He married Lorraine L. Mimick on January 24, 1953. Carroll was one of the original organizers of the Trailsman 4-H Horse Club and served 20 years as a 4-H Horse Club leader. He volunteered 44 years on the Columbus Rural Fire Department. While on the Fire Department he received the Columbus Rural Fire District Certificate of Award for Outstanding Service to the Columbus Rural Fire Department (1966-2010). He was a former Captain of the fire department and received the Eagles Fire Fighters Award. Carroll also received the Volunteer Fire Insurance Service Award. Carroll was a past member and director Izaak Walton League. He was an avid hunter and member of the NRA and Ducks Unlimited for several years. He participated in the Grand National Mixed Bag Hunt & Conservation Days where he guided numerous celebrities like Roy Rogers, Jim Cabela, Whitey Herzog, & James Doohan (Scotty from Star Trek). Carroll was a member of the American Legion where he volunteered for many years and participated in the Freedom Flight for WWII veterans. In 2006 he received the Legionnaire of the Year Award from Hartman Post #84 American Legion for outstanding leadership and service. Carroll played for many years on Columbus and Leigh softball teams and also coached Little League Baseball. In 1996 he was awarded Agri-business of the Year by the Cattleman's Association and was member of Nebraska Cattleman's Association for many years. Carroll was a past member of the Columbus Builders Association.

Grandson: Justin C. (Amanda) Henke of Omaha, NE
Great Grandson: Aidan Ballentine of Columbus, NE
Step-Grandson: Erik (Lucie) Pronold of Sisters, OR
Step-Great Grandsons: Cooper and Boone Pronold of Sisters, OR

He was preceded in death by:

Sister: Mildred Soulliere

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Platte County 4-H Horse Scholarship fund, Immanuel Lutheran School or The Cure PSP
