Carl J. Schumacher, 70, of Platte Center died Friday, July 8, 2005 at his home in rural Platte Center. Funeral services are 10:00 am Monday July 11 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center with the Rev. Rod Kneifl officiating. Visitation is after 5 pm Sunday at St. Joseph Church with a Vigil Service at 7 pm Sunday, also at the church. Visitation continues Monday from 9 am until service time at the church. Interment is in Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery with military honors by Platte Center American Legion Honor Guard.
Carl John Schumacher was born on December 7, 1934 in Platte Center to Frank and Margaret (Bender) Schumacher. He attended St. Joseph School, Platte Center High School, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he received his B.A. in History. He served in the US Army from 1956-1958. Upon his return to Platte Center, Carl worked for the Nebraska Job Service. On April 4, 1970 he married Bonnie Berends at St. Joseph Church. Until his retirement, Carl along with his brothers operated Schumacher Irrigation, Inc. in Platte Center. He was a member of St. Joseph Church where he served as an usher and as a former President of the Parish Council. Carl served on the Columbus Community Hospital Board and was a member of the Sertoma Club. He enjoyed golf, playing cards, traveling, Nebraska Football, and spending time with his family.
