Bud Nelson, age 82, of Columbus died Monday, June 5, 2006 following a short battle with cancer at the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln. Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. The Rev. Timothy White will officiate. Visitation is Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Burial is at the Immanuel Lutheran-South Branch Cemetery in rural Albion.

Leo M. "Bud" Nelson was born May 6, 1924 on the family farm near Cedar Rapids, Nebraska to Goodman and Selma (Anderson) Nelson. He attended rural grade school and graduated from St. Edward High School. During WWII Bud served in the United States Army Medical Corps and was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. On February 17, 1948, he married Helen Nelson at South Branch Lutheran Church in rural Albion and was later confirmed there. To this union three daughters and one son were born. He worked for several years in Albion for Bill Cook doing radio and TV sales and repair work. Following that he operated his own TV and appliance business in Albion (Nelson Service) for a number of years in the 1960's and early '70's. Upon the family's relocation to Columbus in 1973, Bud worked for Nitz Furniture for five years. He then went into business on his own doing service work on all appliances. He could fix anything and was often called upon by former customers for his advice long after his retirement.
Bud passed away on June 5, 2006, at The Monarch in Lincoln, NE after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Columbus; daughters, Deb, Jodi, and Sherrie Nelson, all of Lincoln, NE; granddaughters, Erin and Jaime Foster, also of Lincoln. He also leaves behind many extended family members and a host of friends. Preceding him in death were his infant son, Daniel Lee; his parents; six brothers, Stanley, Maynard, Glenn, Vernon, Marvin, and Aubrey; twin sister, Martha Lucille, and sisters, Mildred, Velma, and Betty.
