Dedicating his life to the Lord and good service, Art "Archie" Sutko, age 92, passed on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Prairie Village in Columbus.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 3, 2020 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus. Military Honors will be conducted by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation is on Thursday from 3-6 pm with a Vigil service to follow at 6:00 pm, all at St. Isidore Church. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9:30 am until service time. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Art was born on September 15, 1927 in Duncan to James and Mayme (Twardowski) Sutko. He attended St. Stanislaus School and Duncan High School, graduating in 1945.
During WWII, he served in the US Army, then began his service with the U.S. Postal Department in 1949. Art worked in the Council Bluffs, IA mail terminal and did mail trips for the Railway Mail Service between Omaha and Cheyenne, WY. He later transferred to the Columbus post office in 1952 as a rural mail carrier. He continued Route 3 service for 33 years, providing two families mail for five generations. After retirement in 1985, he worked for McKown Funeral home.
Art married Edna Stempek Torczon on April 24, 1954 at St. Stanislaus church in Duncan. He loved his baseball and fast pitch softball in Duncan/Columbus, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. He belonged to St. Isidore church as a charter member, was a Eucharistic Minister for over 30 years and belonged to the Holy Name Society. Art was one of the first lay persons to serve on the Scotus High School board, was a member of the St. Isidore parish council, belonged to the American Legion, was a charter member of the 1902 NARFE chapter (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association) and a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edna Sutko of Columbus and four children. Frank Torczon III of Duncan, Tim Sutko of Dallas, TX, Joe Sutko of Omaha and Regina (John DeBord) of Mundelein, IL. Three grandchildren including Matt (Jamie) Torczon of Pender, NE, Dylan and Luke DeBord of Mundelein, IL. Great-grandchildren include Haylie Torczon of Auburn and Hayden Torczon of Pender. Additional survivors include many nieces and nephews. Art was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Sutko and sister Imelda Baker both of Omaha.
Art loved to talk, seldom spoke an unkind word and never met a dog he did not like.
