Alvin F. "Al" Wertz died Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.
Alvin F. Wertz was born September 30, 1926 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Balzar "Bud" and Emma (Knaub) Wertz. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944 and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Al served in the U.S. Army during WWII from December 1944 - November 1946 being stationed in Japan and the Philippines. He married Myra M. Leybold on February 27, 1949 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lincoln. The couple moved to Columbus in 1954. As a Columbus business man he was associated with Texaco Co., owned Wertz Rentals and Ace Hardware. His public service work included Civil Service Commission, Planning and Zoning Board and was Mayor of Columbus from 1992 - 1996. Al was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
