Alvin Kurtenbach

Alvin (Alvie) Kurtenbach passed away peacefully at Mory's Haven on Monday, February 11, 2019.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 am Friday, February 15, 2019 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. There will be a 7:00 pm vigil service Thursday at the church. Visitation is Thursday 4-7 pm at the church. Visitation will continue Friday morning 9:30 am until service time at the church. Burial will be in the All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Bonaventure Church or Scotus Central High School

Alvie was born on August 17, 1936 on the family farm in rural Platte County near St. Bernard, Nebraska to Tony and Rose Kurtenbach. Alvie attended St. Bernard grade school and played baseball on the St. Ben town team. As a teenager, Alvie worked at the alfalfa mill in Monroe and as a farm hand in addition to working on the family farm.

In 1954 Alvie enlisted in the Army and was trained in radio communications. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and worked at various jobs in Chicago before returning to Nebraska in 1957. Alvie married Elaine Blahak on September 12, 1959. He worked at Behlen, Scotus High School, Columbus City Schools, and Central Parts & Machine until the age of 78. Throughout his life, Alvie also had a number of part time jobs, including a cleaning business, mowing lawns, and shoveling snow.

Alvie was a member of Saint Bonaventure church where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of Perpetual Adoration, and the Knights of Columbus.

Alvie's hobbies included driving his 1955 Oldsmobile Holiday to car shows and keeping his 1969 Chevy pickup in top shape. He enjoyed maintaining his lawn, gardening, Husker football and baseball, and especially the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed spending time with his Grandkids at their sporting events and activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Rose Kurtenbach, brother and sister-in-law Maynard and Margie Kurtenbach, and granddaughter Jill Kurtenbach. He is survived by his wife Elaine, sons Gary (Linette) Kurtenbach, Mark (Janet) Kurtenbach – both of Lincoln, and Lora (Jim) Schroeder of Davenport, Iowa, his eight grandchildren, sisters Joan (Ed) Heimann, Kathy (Gerry) Engelbert, Norma Jean Beiermann who was raised with Alvie, and many nieces and nephews.
