Alfred Laird

Alfred F. Laird, age 82, of Columbus, died Saturday, January 5, 2002 at the Columbus Manor. Funeral services are11:00 a.m. Tuesday; January 8, 2002 at the McKown Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt will officiate. Burial with military honors by the Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 5-7 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home

Alfred was born April 3, 1919 in Superior, Nebraska to Scott and Elin (Persson) Laird. He received his early education in Superior and graduated from Superior High School in 1936. He then attended Boyles Business College in Omaha. On April 7, 1942 he married Virginia Webster in Wahoo, Nebraska. Alfred served in WWII from May 15, 1942 until December 31, 1945. He then served in the Army Reserves until being called to duty with the 338th Engineers Battalion during the Korean War. He served from January 23, 1951 until December 22, 1952. He remained with the Army Corp of Engineers for over 40 years. During this time he lived in Omaha until 1969 when he moved to Alexandria, Virginia. Alfred retired in 1981. In 1990 he moved to Columbus, Nebraska where he has lived since. He was a member of the American Legion and N.A.R.F.E. Alfred was one of the original committee member working on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.
