John "Jack" Mares, age 88, of Columbus died Thursday, May 3, 2007 at Columbus Community Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 am Monday, May 7, 2007 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend David Fulton officiating. Visitation is on Sunday from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm, also at the funeral home. Visitation continues Monday morning from 8:00 -9:30 am at McKown Funeral Home. Interment is in the Schuyler Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.
Jack Mares was born February 22, 1919 in Rogers, Nebraska to Constantine and Anna (Fallon) Mares. He attended Schuyler public schools. On September 11, 1940 he was united in marriage to Reta A. Bolt at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Jack served in the U.S. Army from October 1943 till February 1946. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa, serving in the 10th Army 87th Field Hospital Wing. After being discharged as a Tech 5 from the military he worked for Leo Dowd in the car and oil business for twenty years. Jack enjoyed traveling and gardening.
