Elizabeth A. "Betty" Hayek, age 100, of Columbus, Nebraska died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Columbus, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2007 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation is 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues Monday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. A Graveside Service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Ulysses, Nebraska.

Elizabeth A. Hayek was born July 21, 1906 in Brainard, Nebraska to Joseph and Mary (Rezac) Sedlak. She grew up in the Gresham area and graduated Valedictorian from Gresham High School in 1925. She was a three year letter winner on the girls basketball team. Betty taught grade school in the Gresham area for a few years. On November 5, 1927 she was united in marriage to James Hayek at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby, Nebraska. The couple lived and farmed in Seward and Butler County. Following her husband's death in 1967 Betty moved to Columbus. She worked as a nurses aid for most of her life. Betty was a member of St. Isidore Church, V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and was an avid sports fan especially horseracing and basketball.
