Ruby J. Harms, 85, of Wood River formerly of Monroe and Columbus, died Sunday March 13, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River. Funeral services are 10:30 am Thursday, March 17, 2005 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humphrey with the Rev. John Hellwege officiating. Visitation is from 4-9 pm Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and continues Thursday morning from 9:30 am until service time at St. Peter's Church in Humphrey. Interment is in the German Lutheran Cemetery in rural Platte Center.
Ruby J. Harms was born June 12, 1919 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin to Frank and Dorothea (Nordholz) Brownell. She was raised in Wisconsin and attended kindergarten through graduation with neighborhood friend Liberace'. She graduated in 1937 from West Milwaukee High School before going on to attend Business College, also in Milwaukee. She did secretarial work and worked for the VA Administration. She married Walter G. Harms on January 26, 1946 in Milwaukee. They moved to Monroe where she raised the family. Ruby moved to Columbus in 1995 following her husband's death in 1993. Following a stroke in 2002, she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River. Ruby was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humphrey where she taught Sunday School, served as the Sunday School Superintendent, was on the finance committee, parish representative to Lutheran Family Services, and served on the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She enjoyed canning, baking, crafts, sewing, reading, and especially every one of her grandchildren that were truly very special to her.
