Kristine A. Hanus, age 99, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at St. Joseph's Villa in David City, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus with Archbishop Jerome Hanus, O.S.B. officiating. Visitation is 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home and after 6:30 p.m. at St. Bonaventure Church with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service. Visitation continues Wednesday morning from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. at McKown Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Kristine Agnes Hanus was born December 15, 1908, in Brainard, Nebraska to Adolph and Josephine Ratkovec Polak. Her early education was in Brainard where she was involved in music, choir, school plays and sodality. Graduating from high school in 1926, she then attended Business College in Grand Island, Nebraska. She married Leo A. Hanus on February 6, 1934, in Brainard and they shared 63 years of marriage before his passing in 1998. Kristine and Leo were partners, not only in married life, but also in raising their family and working together in their farming years. In 1964 they moved to Omaha where Kristine worked as a cook at St. Richards School and Immanuel Hospital. They relocated to Columbus in 1972 and she was employed at Louies Restaurant and Holiday Inn until retirement in 1979. Kristine especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grand-children. She will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking and baking skills as well as her enjoyment of music, needlework, travel and the outdoors. Kristines deep faith was reflected in her daily life, and over the years she was always involved in church activities. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus and a 71 year member of Catholic Workman Branch 16 of Brainard, Nebraska.
Survivors are four daughters: Sr. Josita Hanus ND of Omaha; Dorothy (John P.) Hain of West Chester PA; Marilyn (Robert) Haerr of Terre Haute, IN; Loretta (Dennis) Masur of Warsaw, IN; and four sons: Alfred (Rita) of Columbus; Archbishop Jerome of Dubuque, IA; Leo (Lorraine) of Denton, TX; and Ernest (Robin) of Omaha; 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren and three sisters-in-law, Ludmilla Birkel of David City, NE; Genevieve Hanus of Lincoln, NE; and Sr. Marietta Hanus SSSF of Milwaukee, WI.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers and four sisters, one daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
