John V. Engel, 61, of Columbus died Friday, December 5, 2003 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday December 9, 2003 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Tom Weisbecker officiating. Burial will be in the All Saints Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to donors choice.
John V. Engel was born August 13, 1942 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Fritz and Gretchen (Hauser) Engel. He graduated from Humphrey High School in 1961. On October 6, 1962 John was united in marriage to Arlene Backes in Humphrey, Nebraska. He worked as a meat manager for National Foods in Pierce, Nebraska before moving to Columbus in 1969. He was a truck driver for Wonder Bread for 17 years and Behlen Manufacturing for 16 years. John enjoyed playing cards, all sports including volunteer coaching basketball, and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #938, past leader of the Columbian Squires and President's Safe Drivers Club.
