Mary Ellen Dowd, age 89, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at the Alegent Hospice Home in Omaha, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. The Rev. Tom Weisbecker will officiate. Visitation is 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday with a 4:00 p.m. All Religious Organizations Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service. Visitation will continue 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Saturday all at the McKown Funeral Home. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Mary Ellen was born December 4, 1917 in Sioux City, Iowa to Richard and Zeta (Patten) Galvin. She attended public school in Woodbury County, Iowa and graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City with a teaching certificate. She was united in marriage with Donald J. Dowd of Schuyler, Nebraska on June 4, 1956, at St. Eugenes Church in Sioux City. She taught school for many years, most recently teaching kindergarten at District 10 School in Columbus before her retirement to care for her husband in 1983.



She was active in various organizations; among them: Catholic Daughters of America, the Legion of Mary, Saint Bons parish prayer line, the Franciscan Third Order, St. Bonaventure Guild, the Columbus Hospital Auxiliary, the Retired Teachers Association and the Extension Club. She enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren, friends and family, reading, religious studies (particularly Thomas Merton), traveling and people of all ages, from all walks of life.



She is survived by:

Son: Dennis D. (Rachel Heaney) Dowd of Omaha, NE

Two Granddaughters: Kathleen Galvin Dowd and Margaret Eileen Dowd, both of Omaha.

One Grandson: John Reardon Dowd of Omaha.

Brother: Daniel F. Galvin (Delores) of Sioux City, IA

Sisters: Zita Galvin of Sioux City, IA; Cecilia (Jerry) McCarty of Eden Prairie, MN

Sisters-in-laws: Alice (John R.) Galvin, Eileen (Leo J. Dowd) and Charlotte Dowd Wesch,

Twenty-six deeply loved nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.



She was preceded in death by:

Parents: Richard and Zeta Galvin

Brother: John R. (Jack) Galvin

Sister: Dorothy Galvin Getty

Husband: Donald James Dowd



Memorials may be directed to St. Johns Catholic church on the campus of Creighton University and to the Hospice House of Omaha.
