Derald D. "Sarge" Deckert, age 74 of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday; July 5, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday; July 9, 2002 at the McKown Funeral Home. The Rev. William Effa will officiate. Burial with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard will be in the Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be Monday 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home and continue 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.
Derald Duane Deckert was born September 13, 1927 in Tilden, Nebraska to Elmer and Mabel (Clark) Deckert. He married Ruth Shenshew on May 11, 1952 in Norfolk, Nebraska. He served in the US Army from 1946 until retiring in 1967 when he joined his family in Columbus, Nebraska. Sarge served during WWII, Korean and served two tours in Viet Nam. While in Columbus he worked for 15 years at Dale Electronics and 7 years at Little Bo's. He was a member of Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post #3704 in Columbus.
