Maurice A. Benedict, age 95, of Ogallala formerly of Bellwood, died Monday; August 5, 2002 in Ogallala, Nebraska. Funeral services are 1:00 p.m. Friday; August 9, 2002 at the Bellwood Methodist Church in Bellwood, Nebraska. The Rev. Gary Main will officiate. Visitation Friday 11:00 a.m. until service time all at the church. Burial will be in the Bellwood Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #327 of Bellwood.
Maurice was born October 28, 1906 in Gordon, Nebraska to Wallace D. and Claire L. (Allen) Benedict. He was raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation near Gordon where he lived in a sod cabin near the trading post with his family. He received his education at Bellwood High School. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as a Seabee. On October 11, 1947 Maurice was united in marriage to Opal Powell in Bellwood where the couple made their home for over 50 years. The couple kept a summer home at Lake McConaughy near Ogallala since the late 1960's and moved to Ogallala to make their home in 1999. Maurice worked for the Burlington Railroad. He then worked for over 25 years as a rural mail carrier in the Bellwood area. He was a member of the Bellwood Methodist Church for over 50 years. Maurice also held membership in the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever ,The Rural Letter Carriers Association , American Legion Post #327 Bellwood and the Seabees Association. Maurice enjoyed hunting and fishing. He raised and adored black labs and loved spending time with Jack Cat.
