Arthur G. Abegglen, age 88, of Columbus died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at his home in Columbus. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2006 at St. Luke's UCC in Columbus. Burial will be in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard. Visitation is Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Thursday morning 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorial may directed to St. Lukes-U.C.C. Building Fund or donors choice.

Arthur G. Abegglen was born September 13, 1917 in Columbus, Nebraska to Fred and Erna (Garlepow) Abegglen. He received his education in Columbus. Art married Phyllis Jackson on December 5, 1940 in Schuyler, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943-1945 in the Pacific Theatre. Art was a Bronze Star recipient. He also received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon awarded for participation against the enemy during the Philippine Island Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Citation. Upon his return to Columbus Art worked at the alfalfa mill. He then worked construction as a brick layer for 26 years. Art then worked at C.K. Planing Mill for 15 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Lukes United Church of Christ where he was confirmed, American Legion and Veteran of Foreign War.
