Fred died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Morys Haven in Columbus.

Fred Adam Vetick was born on March 26th, 1923 to Adam and Frances (Shemek) Vetick in Nance County. He was educated up until the 8th grade and then farmed with his parents. He also worked for Grosch Irrigation for 8 years. During that time he married Shirley Kauffman on August 3rd, 1948. In this union, 5 children were born. They lived in Silver Creek for a year, before moving to Genoa where he worked as a milk truck driver for Westring Trucking. In 1956, they moved back to Silver Creek where him and his brother, Richard, farmed and milked cows northwest of town. Fred was the mayor of Silver Creek for two terms. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Silver Creek Fire Department for 20 years. In 1982 he started driving the Silver Creek Public School bus, in which he thoroughly loved his time doing it. In 1989, Fred and Shirley decided to move to Columbus. In 1990, he went to work at St. Anthonys school as the custodian and in 2001 he retired. Never to be idle, he went to work part-time for Columbus Police Department as the custodian for 2 years and also was a Columbus Public School crossing guard until 2009. He was a member of St. Isidore Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Fred was always there with a helping hand to anyone that was in need. He had a hobby of tearing apart old junk and he loved to listen to his polka music on Sunday mornings. He loved baseball and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and loved to watch his 3 grandsons play baseball for Columbus High School. He always loved to have his children and grandchildren around him.

Fred will be survived and missed by his loving wife, Shirley; daughter, Beverly (Tim) Baker of Omaha; granddaughters, Tara (Nathan) Culley of Kansas City, Kansas, Carla (Alberto) Miranda of Omaha ; daughter, Peggy (George) Harvey of Columbus; grandsons, Sean Harvey, George Jr. (Michele) Harvey of Lincoln, Matthew (Katrina) Harvey of Columbus; daughter, Christine (Edwin) Elm of Columbus; grandsons, Adam (Stacy) Elm of Columbus, Austin Elm of Lincoln, Alden Elm of Columbus; son, Timothy (Mary) Vetick of Columbus; grandchildren, Molly, Travis, Maggie, and Marissa Vetick all of Columbus; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bernard (Pat) Vetick of Silver Creek, Richard (Alyce) Vetick of Columbus; sisters, Irene Volnek and Delores (Ed) Tomasiewicz of Columbus; brother-in-law, Andy Volnek of Columbus; sisters-in-law, Ellen Vetick and Molly Sherlock both of Omaha, as well as many nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son: John Adam, brothers: Dennis, Chloris and Larry, sister: Phyllis Volnek, sister-in-law: Toni Vetick, and brother-in-law: Mike Volnek.
