Phil J. Zak, age 82 of Monroe passed away Saturday; July 19, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday; July 22, 2003 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. The Rev. Robert Nienaber will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Duncan. Visitation will be 3-5 pm Monday at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and after 6:30 pm at the church in Genoa. A Vigil will be held Monday evening at 7:30 pm also at the church. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 9:30 am until service time at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family choice.

Mr. Zak was born April 28, 1921 in Platte County, Nebraska to John and Catherine (Kaipust) Zakrzewski. He attended Districts #31 and #64 school in Platte County. On April 29, 1961 he was united in marriage to Marie Stec at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church - Krakow, rural Genoa. The couple lived and farmed south of Lindsay, Nebraska until 1967 when Phil retired and moved to Monroe. While in Monroe he was a member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department and also coached Little League baseball. He was a member of St. Rose Of Lima Church in Genoa, past member of the Holy Name Society, Knights Of Columbus Genoa Council, and the Eagles Aerie #1834 in Columbus. Phil enjoyed playing softball, fishing, bowling, and playing cards. He was awarded the Good Neighbor Award of Aksarben.
