Harold L. Van Diest, age 78, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, February 13, 2006 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 10:30 am Thursday at the Federated Church in Columbus with the Rev. Elizabeth Parker officiating. Visitation is on Wednesday from 5-8:30 pm at McKown Funeral Home. There will be a Masonic service at 7:30 pm Wednesday, also at the funeral home. Visitation continues Thursday morning from 9:30 until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15. Interment is in Roselawn Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the Federated Church or to the donors choice.

Harold L. Van Diest was born April 1, 1927 at St. Mary's Hospital in Columbus to Fred and Thelma Leona (McFarland) Roelle. He grew up in Columbus and attended Kramer High School. Harold served as a Seaman 1st Class and Airman 1st Class in the US Navy during World War II from 1944 until 1946 and during Korea from 1950 until 1951. He married Doris L. Evans on March 27, 1949 at the Federated Church. Harold lived in Columbus and worked for Behlen Manufacturing for 43 years. Harold was an active member of the Federated Church since 1949, the Masons, Shriners, Order of the Eastern Star, Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star, lifetime member of the VFW, Eagles Club, American Legion, and was a Charter member and past-president of the Credit Union. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, dancing, and flying.
