Donald J. Vandenberg, age 84, of Platte Center, Nebraska died Monday, September 17, 2007 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 20, 2007 at St. Joseph Church in Platte Center with Reverend Rod Kneifl officiating. Visitation is 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation continues Thursday morning from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial is in the Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Platte Center American Legion Parry Post #283 Honor Guard.
Donald J. Vandenberg was born October 4, 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska to Joseph and Valerya (Czyzyk) Vandenberg. He graduated from Omaha South in 1939 and attended Omaha University for 2 years. Don served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from October 1942 - December 1945. On September 5, 1949 he was united in marriage to Darlene Bruckner at St. Joseph Church in Platte Center. The couple lived in Omaha where Don worked for General Electric Supply. In 1952 they moved to Platte Center. Don was co-owner of Bruckner Merchantile in Platte Center for 20 years. He then worked for Goering Construction for 10 years until retiring. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, American Legion Parry Post #283, Platte Center Lions Club and the Volunteer Fire Department. Don enjoyed playing cards with his friends and watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox.
