Kenneth V. Oakeson, 79, of Columbus died Wednesday April 25, 2001 at Genoa Long Term Care. Funeral Services are 10:30 am Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Ernest Smith and Rev. Steven Williams officiating. Visitation is from 3-8 pm on Thursday at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues at Peace Lutheran Church on Friday from 9:30 until service time with a family prayer service at 10:15. Burial will be in Columbus Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.

Kenneth was born October 16, 1921 to Julius and Anna (Olson) Oakeson in Gregory County, SD. He enlisted in the US Navy on Dec. 16, 1941 and served on the U.S.S. Enterprise aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He received the Presidential Unit Commendation Ribbon with one Blue Star, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the American Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars and the WWII Ribbon. He was discharged on October 9, 1945.

On July 17, 1948 he married Irene (Bruckner) Oakeson in Gregory County, SD. He worked for Minnegasco for 33 years before retiring in 1982. He enjoyed all sports, fishing, and camping. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post # 84 where he served as past Commander, and was a life member of the VFW Post 3704. He was one of the organizers and coached Little League baseball and Pony League baseball for many years.

Five Grandchildren One Great Granddaughter
Nieces and Nephews

He was preceded by his parents, 3 Brothers-Ove, Reinhold, and Donald, 3 sisters-Judith Velder, Martha Hummel, and Dorothy Ellis.
