In Memory of Lee Hegi
Lee E. Hegi, age 93 of Columbus died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Columbus. Funeral service are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus. The Rev. Wayne Schupbach will officiate. Burial will be in the Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday 4-8 pm at the McKown Funeral Home and Wednesday 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested. A lunch will be served at Wunderlich Catering following the graveside services.
Lee Elmer Hegi was born January 3, 1915 in Platte County, Nebraska to Paul and Elsie (Ernst) Hegi. He received his early education at District #16 in Polk County. Lee has lived and farmed on the the home place in Polk County since 1917. He married Bernice Brock on May 27, 1940 in Columbus. He loved his work on the farm, and was known for his watermelons and cantaloupe. He was a member of St. Lukes UCC, Izaac Walton League and former member of Elks Lodge and Swiss Maenercher. Lee played baseball, for Lone Star and the Columbus Merchants in the Platte Valley Baseball League and Pioneer Night League. He made many trips with his sons to watch their Little League baseball games. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, sheephead card games and horseshoes.

The beans, the corn, row after row.
There is lots of pride and pleasure in raising livestock too. The hogs, the cattle, there is lots of work to do.
It takes a world of patience and lots of faith as well. It takes a bit of know how as anyone can tell.
But oh, it is really worth it all, for in your heart you know you would not change the smallest part of being where things grow.
The sun, the soil, the tillage, the showers of rain that fall...
A Harvest that is bountiful, depends upon them all. The man who makes a living by the turning of the soil, has peace, Contentment, and what is more a partnership with God!
He has gone to heaven with God’s guidance to plant his fields forever.
