(Who knew he would stay there for the remainder of his life?) I was only 3 and we shared a bedroom. He was my sanctuary during thunderstorms and let me crawl into bed with him. I remember him and my dad (Bill) playing their guitars and singing -- Make The World Go Away was my favorite. Another treasured memory is my nickname. My maternal grandfather nicknamed me JenniBird. Jim put his own stamp on it by calling me JenniWren. Every year, in his beautiful cursive handwriting, I received a birthday card addressed to Wren. Even though I'm now 46, he still called me Wren the last time I saw him. Though we didn't get to see each other often, I thoroughly enjoyed those times, whether recounting stories with my dad about their wilder days, talking KC Royals baseball, or just 'yucking it up'. My greatest disappointment is that my children didn't get to know him the way I did. I've no doubt Uncle Jim is in heaven cracking a joke and shaking his head at all of us crying. My joy is knowing that someday I will see him again. He'll probably meet me at the pearly gates saying, "Did you hear the one about..." I love you, Uncle Jim.
