Vernon Nitz, 91, of Columbus died Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Beverly Health Care in Columbus. Services are 10:30 am Monday at McKown Funeral Home with the Rev. Theresa Meyer officiating. Visitation is on Sunday from 3-6 pm at McKown Funeral Home and on Monday morning from 9:30 am until service time. Interment is in Roselawn Cemetery. Vernon Nitz was born January 20, 1915 in rural Clarkson, NE to Jake and Bertha (Kroeger) Nitz. He received his education at District #34 School in Colfax County. He married Loretta Malena on June 7, 1940 in Denver, Colorado. They lived in Lyons, NE where he owned and operated a gravel company. He moved to Columbus where he owned a Sinclair service station before going to work at Behlen Manufacturing for 16 years and Gambles for 8 years. He retired in 1979. Following his retirement he had a business roto-tilling gardens and drove cars for Phil Spady. Vernon enjoyed gardening, fishing, and watching his grandkids sporting events. He was a member of the Eagle's Club. He is survived by:
